30 Day Meme- Days Eighteen, Nineteen and Twenty

So, long time no update. Day eighteen was a whatever tickles your fancy day, and because it fell on Christmas I suppose I'll say my theme for that day was: Favorite Christmas Film. Mine would be It's A Wonderful Life as I think it's a beautiful and meaningful film.

Day Nineteen's theme is: A talent of mine. I guess you could say that writing is my number one talent. I write as much as I possibly can, and I love to do so.

Day Twenty's theme is: A hobby of mine. Reading is definitely my number one hobby. I'm almost always reading a book.

So yeah, there's three days summed up in one entry.

Merry Christmas and Happy Holidays to you all! I hope you all are having a great day regardless of your religious beliefs or what you celebrate this time of year.

Anyway, this morning was pretty awesome.

30 Day Meme-Days Sixteen and Seventeen

Sorry I missed yesterday, I have a bit of a cold and I kind of forgot to do the meme. Anyway let's get back on track.

Day Sixteen's Theme: A song or song(s) that make you cry. I'll warn you now, most of my choices are either extremely well known, or not known at all unless you're a nerd.

"While Me Guitar Gently Weeps" -The Beatles

While I love the original, and I do, it's Martin Luther McCoy's rendition in "Across The Universe" that makes me cry like a bitch.

Titanic-Heaven (or The Dream)

While some people prefer to call this song The Dream, I prefer to call it Heaven, because deny it all you want, Rose dies at the end of the film, which is so beautiful. Anyway, I love this song, and it breaks my heart every time I listen to it, which of course makes it hard to listen to because I always end up crying.

Doomsday- Murray Gold (Doctor Who)

As a Doctor/Rose shipper, I feel no need to explain why this song makes me cry.

Day Seventeen- An Art Piece

The Two Frida's by Frida Kahlo. My absolute favorite painting of all time. I love the conflicts that she painted here, between her traditional Mexican self that she was and the Euro-American that everybody else wanted her to be. It's amazing.

Today's Theme: A Fanfic.

I would write down several fanfics, but I honestly can't think of one that I could write about. My personal favorite fanfic is called "The Harlot's Potion" it's a Harry Potter fanfic, Snape/Hermione pairing, fucked up I know, but my favorite fanon pairing out there. http://ashwinder.sycophanthex.com/viewstory.php?sid=7404 It's sexual, but it has a very good plot, so if you're a Hermione/Snape shipper, go out and read it. Today's Theme: A Non-Fictional Book.

Angela's Ashes by the late Frank McCourt. Angela's Ashes is the story of Frank McCourt's early life in Catholic Ireland. His father was a drunk who couldn't hold a job, and his mother was a sad woman who had lost several children. The fact that Frank was able to come out of his circumstances to become a strong, successful man is inspiring. Angela's Ashes is my favorite memoir ever written, it's heartbreaking and depressing and funny all at the same time.

30 Day Meme- Days Twelve and Thirteen

So, as you probably noticed that I missed updating yesterday, I was out with my family celebrating Christmas. So yesterday, day twelve was a "Whatever Tickles Your Fancy" day, and I'm choosing to not participate in day twelve. I honestly can't think of anything to choose for a topic. However, today, day Thirteen's topic is "A Fictional Book" and I have one that probably tons of people have heard of, but not many people have read...possibly:

Johnny Got His Gun by Dalton Trumbo. Johnny Got His Gun is the story of a man in World War One who is caught in a bomb explosion. He loses his arms, legs, sight and sense of hearing. It's a truly disturbing but moving and deep book. It really makes you think about the price of war, and what life truly is. I've never been so deeply moved or disturbed by a book in my entire life. I recommend that everybody read it at least once.

The Meerkats at my local zoo. Meerkats, next to Giant Pandas are my favorite animals. I love their sense of family responsibility and love for each other. Give Meerkat Manor a watch and you'll see why I love them. I spent a lot of time just watching them at the zoo the last time I was there and just loved seeing them play with each other and dig in the dirt and sand. They're beautiful little creatures.

So today is a whatever tickles my fancy day, meaning I get to choose what to write about. My choice of topics is: Favorite Movie Soundtracks. Notice how I put the s in there, it's because I have several.

Titanic: Music from the Motion Picture and Back to Titanic. I think James Horner is a brilliant composer who is able to convey wonderful emotions through just a series of similar notes. We hear very similar strains of music within his songs, and it's completely intentional on his part, and his job is to always remind us of the characters, so when you hear the music, you think of them. He does a brilliant job.

#2:

Brokeback Mountain: Composed by Gustavo Santaolalla. His compositions for this film are heartbreaking and beautiful. You can visualize the scenery of the film just by listening to the music. And the ending song breaks my heart every time I listen to it.

#3:

Harry Potter and the Sorcerer's Stone: Composed by John Williams. I can honestly find no fault with this soundtrack. It is haunting and funny and epic. "Hedwig's Theme" is one of the best instrumental's out there. It just gives you this magical feeling inside. And Williams was able to capture, not just the feeling of the film, but the feeling of the novel as well.

Today's topic: My favorite book!

Phantom by Susan Kay. Phantom is a retelling of "Phantom of the Opera" starting off with Erik's birth, and ending with his death. The book is a must have and a must read for any serious Phantom of the Opera fans.

Why It's My Favorite: I first discovered this novel when I was in 8th grade. I was completely and utterly obsessed with anything having to do with Phantom of the Opera (still am!) and I got the book out of the library. I instantly fell in-love with it. I'm particularly fond of the way that Kay tells the story through the view points of both Erik and Christine, but as well as other characters. It's a heart-wrenching story and it made me cry like a baby. I actually prefer this to the original, as it makes your heart ache for Erik and want him to be "normal" so badly, because it's what he wants. I fell in-love with him. This novel saved my life in ways that I won't go into but I love it more than anything in the world.

30 Day Meme- Song Theme Revisited

As you are all aware I already answered question #1 with my favorite song(s) but I've decided to revisit the theme with my favorite instrumental songs. Youtube videos below:

Rose's Theme/The Portrait- James Horner (Titanic). I think out of all the instrumental music in the world, this is perhaps the most gorgeous. It's simple and beautiful. When I get married, I want this song playing when I walk down the aisle.

Heaven- James Horner (Titanic) Very similar to Rose's Theme/The Portrait, but also very very different. It's a gorgeous ending song, and makes you cry, at least it makes me cry. Every time I listen to it, I see the ship going back to her original beauty and I think of all of the people on that ship, and even about Rose seeing Jack after doing everything she promised him she'd do. It's heartbreakingly beautiful. Therefore this song will probably end up on the list of songs that make me cry theme.

So today is day three of the thirty day meme, and today's query is what my favorite television program is.

Doctor Who- Created by: Sydney Newman, C. E. Webber and Donald Wilson. Doctor Who tells the story of an alien, a Time Lord called The Doctor who travels around in time and space with a human companion, usually a female.

Reason why it's my favorite: In the original show it's mostly campy with bad graphics and funny looking aliens, but overall great storylines. My personal favorite Doctor of the old series, Doctor #4 (Tom Baker) was really the first one to bring a great deal of humor to the role. In the new series (reestablished in 2005) the series has better graphics, though still some campy storylines, but overall the show has a darker tone, with the Doctor being the last Time Lord. I'm fond of the darker tone that the show has taken over the show. But I became especially fond of the show when Rose, the 9th and 10th Doctor's companion came on board. It was the first time that we were able to view the Doctor through a human's view, and in my case it was a human whom I was able to identify with. But over time, even when Rose wasn't on the show any more, the show continued and got better and better. Series Three of the new series left a lot to be desired, but Martha is a great companion, and then Series Four came along, with Donna Noble, who is, in my opinion, the greatest companion the Doctor has ever had. The storylines, the Doctor no matter what he is doing, and his wonderful companions make this my favorite television show.

30 Day Meme- Day Two

SO today's question is what is my favorite film? I have plenty of films that I love, but I only have one absolute favorite movie that I could watch over and over again without ever tiring of it. I'm sure you can all guess what it is, but here's a video anyway:

Titanic- Directed by James Cameron and starring my all time favorite actress: Kate Winslet, and one of my all time favorite actors: Leonardo DiCaprio.

Reason why it's my favorite: It is emotionally heartbreaking. The director and producers did a real service to the actual story of the Titanic by being as faithful to her beauty and to her sinking as they could. The dialogue, though sometimes cheesy, works wonderfully. You care about Jack and Rose and are therefore able to connect yourself to the real story of the ship. The use of historical characters speaking with and having interactions with fictional characters is probably my favorite thing about the film. We see Thomas Andrews the designer of the ship, Captain Edward J. Smith making his final crossing with the Titanic, J. Bruce Ismay the owner of the White Star Line and the Titanic, Margaret (Molly) Brown, Isador and Ida Strauss(owners of Macy's) , the Countess of Roths and even Fred Barrett the leading stoker in the boiler room as well as the countless and nameless passengers who would die in the early morning hours of April 15, 1912. So much could have gone wrong with this film but it didn't. It makes me feel like I'm back in 1912, taking a voyage on that ship, connecting with those people. I still cry every time I watch this film. I'm still emotionally touched by it. I connect with Rose in ways I've never connected with any character before. And I love the relationship between Jack and Rose, it's based on trust. This movie changed my world in ways that I can't even begin to express. That's why it's my favorite!

So today's theme is what my favorite song is.

So, I have several, but my all time favorite song is:

The Music of the Night, specifically sung by either Ted Keegan (my first and favorite Erik) or Michael Crawford. I've loved this song since I was about 7 years old when I first heard it, and I've never stopped loving it.

My other favorite song is a bit more well-known just because it's played on classic rock radio stations a lot:

Goodbye Yellow Brick Road- By Elton John (my all time favorite singer). It's written by possibly the greatest songwriter of all time Bernie Taupin and composed by Sir Elton himself. I think it's incredibly poetic and beautifully played.

So I just called the Rochester Museum and Science Center and asked if they were looking for volunteers and they said that they are!! So I went online and I filled out the application and I will hopefully be volunteering for them really soon. I'm so unbelievably excited, I love the RMSC, it's one of my favorite places in Rochester. All of you should go to rmsc.org to see what it's all about. So yeah, there's my quick update!! :D

Oh My God You Guys!

So, the Titanic Artifact Exhibit is coming to Rochester this year. It opens on October 1st. My sister really wants me to go with her. And as torn as I am about it (it's run by RMS Titanic Inc. the company that salvaged piece of the hull from the shipwreck, which personally disgusts me) I'm going to go. The majority of my life has revolved around this ship, her passengers and her story. While I had been talking about becoming a journalist, I have finally decided that my life's goal is to work for the Titanic Historical Society. I want to preserve the ship for as long as possible, and I want to keep her and her history in the minds of people forever. Just because it has been 97 years doesn't mean it's any less important. I'm literally crying because I'll be seeing actual artifacts from her. Plates and glasses and lifebelts and all of that. I don't know how well I'm going to be able to contain my emotions while I'm there, I can promise that at one point I will probably break down into tears. Not many people understand me, but I'm so emotionally connected to this ship and her story. I don't know when we're going, but I hope it's within the first or second week of the opening. Plus tons of my money will probably be spent on memorabilia. So that's that.

I got a new header for my journal and a new icon. I like the images in the header, but I dislike the quote (A Walk to Remember is one of my least favorite films/books of all time. Everything about it is cliched and bad, and the only good thing about the film is Mandy Moore.) But my love of the images and the techniques used for it were so great that they outweighed my dislike for the quote.

"Barrett's Song" from Maury Yeston's musical "Titanic" What can I say, it's a wonderful song and I love Brian D'Arcy James' voice. My next most played song is "Being Alive" from the musical "Company" as sung by Raul Esparza who has the most beautiful voice ever in the entire world (next to Michael Crawford's back in the 80s.)
